A Prayer Against the Damned

Hail Mary, full of grace, our immaculate Mother,

bless our cursed shores; kiss the sand with the footprints of the damned.

We give you thanks for iron, salt, and paper.

The material of gates, of bread, of stories

and yet, in your wisdom, powerful gifts.

Holy Mother, please intercede with the metal in my hands,

the salt in my bowl,

the paper folded in my book.

In your great wisdom, our eleven houses will stand on these tools

born from the earth, trees, and ground:

iron, salt, and paper.

Historical note from Reade McLeod: Sister Mary Rose Pelletier is a local legend. She was indeed the first to document iron, salt, and paper as possible defenses against the dead. Some whisper that she is perhaps even the one to have discovered them.
